Levels I and II
Levels I and II of the ESL program are designed to accommodate beginning to moderate levels of English proficiency. Students in Level I are immersed into English conversation and beginning English reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar, as well as a social studies course, 20th Century World History. They are mainstreamed in math, science and the arts. In Level II, ESL students continue intensive English studies, with courses now modeled on mainstream English and history courses, and begin their immersion into American literature and history.  Students continue to be mainstreamed in math, science and arts, progressing to the next level.

  • Level I Courses: ESL I (2 classes), Conversational English, 20th Century World History (ESL), Science (mainstream), Math (mainstream) and Art (mainstream).
  • Level II Courses: ESL II (2 classes), Conversational English (for new ESL II students only), American Studies (ESL), Science (mainstream), Math (mainstream), Art (mainstream) and Health (mainstream).

Level III
Level III of the program mainstreams students completely into history and English classes, while continuing their progress in science, math and arts classes. Students take one ESL class:  an intensive writing seminar which focuses on the writing skills necessary for success in all areas, such as research papers and analytical essays.  TOEFL preparation is also a key focus of this course. At this stage, many ESL III students are enrolled in AP science and math classes.

  • Level III Courses: English course (mainstream), history course (mainstream), ESL III Writing Seminar, Science (mainstream), Math (mainstream) and Art (mainstream).

The Modern Language graduation requirement is waived for ESL students.
